The sound that is frequently heard during an adjustment is called a cavitation. The release of gas within the joint causes the pop, the gas is moved from high pressure to low pressure - this is comparable to opening a can. Nothing is snapping or breaking when you hear this sound. The mechanism is similar to cracking knuckles. Submarines also make cavitation’s as bubbles leave the propellers.
Is the Crack Essential?
Some chiropractors and patients consider an audible pop necessary for the treatment to be successful, although this belief is not confirmed as there is no scientific physiological data supporting this.
